Team Hornady members, Tony Gimmellie and Rob Ormond placed first and second respectively, shooting Hornady BTHP and A-Max bullets. Participating in the event were 35 east coast competitors who excel in long-range precision shooting. The match, now its third year, took place at the Miffin County Sportsmen's Association in Lewistown, PA, on September 24, 2011.
Recent rains made the course of fire slippery and sloppy for competitors and only added to the challenge of locating 14 stages of steel and paper targets partially obscured by vegetation, trees and hidden in fields. Shooting positions included kneeling, sitting and prone. Additionally, each participant was suspended in a Swiss seat harness hanging from a rope line to engage 30" round metal targets at a range of 505 yards.
Long time Team Hornady member and federal law enforcement officer, Tony Gimmellie, was the overall individual winner and explained, "For my 243 caliber rifle, I chose Hornady 105 grain BTHP match bullets because it allows a flatter trajectory shooting at unknown distance targets and yet it gave me room for error in the ranging of targets."
Rob Ormond took second place, shooting Hornady 30 caliber 208 grain A-MAX bullets. Ormond said, "Because the Black Hat Sniper Challenge is such a demanding stage of fire, I needed bullets with high ballistic coefficients for superb downrange performance. For my 300 Win Mag rifle, Hornady A-MAX gives me that assurance."
